DSCC declares Paltan-North South Road hawker-free 

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has declared the main road from Paltan intersection through Gulistan Zero Point to North South Road (Tanti Bazar More) hawker-free, aiming to ensure unobstructed movement of pedestrians and vehicles along the busy corridor.

DSCC Administrator Freedom Fighter Md Abdus Salam made the announcement during an on-site inspection of the designated hawker-free roads on Thursday.

During the inspection, he said no hawkers would be allowed to occupy the main road from Paltan intersection to North South Road via Gulistan Zero Point. Anyone violating the restriction would face immediate legal action, he said.

The DSCC administrator said the city corporation had held several discussions with representatives of hawker organisations, who had agreed to voluntarily leave the main roads.

"Everyone's cooperation is needed to restore a comfortable environment for pedestrians and motorists on the roads and footpaths," he said.

However, a limited number of registered hawkers will be allowed to operate at designated locations on the eastern side of the footpath adjacent to Ramna Bhaban, provided sufficient space is kept clear for pedestrians.

Abdus Salam said hawkers would be permitted only according to the designated location, time, number and registration requirements. No one would be allowed to set up stalls outside the approved arrangements and cause public inconvenience.

Regarding the demand from hawkers to reduce registration fees, he said the matter had been brought to the attention of the concerned ministry and further decisions would be taken in accordance with its directives.
