High demand for Messi's farewell match causes ticket site crash

Online ticket sales for Lionel Messi’s farewell match in Argentina caused a website crash before completely selling out in less than two hours.

The international friendly between Argentina and Benin is scheduled for October 6 at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires during the FIFA international break.

Tickets went on sale on Thursday at 6:00 PM local time through the ticketing platform 'Deportick'. Within seconds of launching, hundreds of thousands of fans flooded the website, causing the platform to crash under intense traffic.

Many users were placed in a virtual queue with wait times exceeding an hour, leading to widespread frustration on social media as fans expressed concern over their chances of securing a ticket. Local news outlet Olé reported being stuck in the virtual queue for over 70 minutes with no progress.

Although the Monumental Stadium has a capacity of around 85,000, only a limited number of tickets were made available to the general public after allocations for sponsors and partners by the Argentine Football Association (AFA). By 7:15 PM, only top-tier seats priced at 320,000 Pesos (around Tk 26,000) remained, and the entire inventory was officially sold out by 7:28 PM.
