Man stabbed during prayers in Sunamganj

A 24-year-old man was allegedly stabbed while performing prostration during Friday prayers at a mosque in Shantiganj, Sunamganj, on Friday. His father was also injured while trying to protect him.
The injured were identified as Nahid Islam, 24, and his father Saifur Rahman, 55, both residents of Birgaon Westpara in the upazila.
The incident occurred at Birgaon Westpara Jame Mosque during Friday prayers.
Abu Bakkar Siddiq Hiru, Nahid’s brother, alleged that Nahid and their father were attacked while they were praying.
He alleged that local union parishad member Zubayer Ahmed ordered the attack while several others, including Rezaul, Afzal, Junel, Sebir and Subad, took part in it.
However, local residents said Nahid and Zubayer had a longstanding dispute.
Ruzel Ahmed, panel chairman of Purba Birgaon Union Parishad, confirmed the incident and said Zubayer, a member of Ward No. 7, and Nahid had been involved in a dispute for some time.
He said Nahid had recently been released after spending around one and a half to two months in jail in connection with the dispute.
Zubayer Ahmed, the accused Ward No. 7 member, denied the allegations against him. He said he was not at the scene at the time and was inspecting a bridge with an engineer.
Zubayer also alleged that Nahid had previously seriously injured someone and claimed he had learned that the attack was carried out because people were angered by Nahid’s behaviour.
Shantiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hillol Chakma said, "the incident occurred over a previous dispute."
He said the injured men had been sent to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The official said no complaint had been filed with the authorities yet and that legal action would be taken if a complaint is submitted.
