Youth missing after falling into Meghna while disembarking from launch

A man, believed to be around 30, went missing after falling into the Meghna River while attempting to disembark from a launch at Shatnal launch terminal in Matlab Uttar upazila of Chandpur on Friday.
A joint rescue operation by naval police and police from Matlab Uttar Police Station is underway to locate him.
Police have detained the MV Mukbil-2 launch and two of its staff members in connection with the incident.
According to police and local sources, the MV Mukbil-2 arrived at Shatnal launch terminal around noon while travelling from Narayanganj to Chandpur. Passengers were disembarking when the man got off the launch.
After reaching the terminal, he realised that he had left his bag inside the launch and went back on board to retrieve it.
Witnesses said, the incident occurred when he attempted to disembark for the second time. As he was preparing to get off, the launch suddenly began moving backwards. He tried to jump onto the terminal but lost his balance and fell into the Meghna River.
He has been missing since then.
Following the incident, the launch quickly left Shatnal terminal and headed towards Mohonpur launch terminal. Members of the Mohonpur naval police outpost later detained the launch and its two staff members.
Mohonpur Naval Police Outpost Officer-in-Charge Md Ruhul Amin said the launch headed towards Mohonpur after the incident and was later detained along with two staff members.
“The matter is being investigated,” he said.
After learning that the man had fallen into the river, local residents rushed to the scene. Members of the Beltali and Mohonpur naval police and Matlab Uttar Police Station later joined the rescue operation, with locals assisting them.
Mozammel Haque PPM, officer-in-charge (OC) of Beltali Naval Police Outpost, said the rescue operation was ongoing but the missing man had not yet been found.
His identity has also not been confirmed.
Police said efforts were underway to identify and rescue the missing man. They were also investigating how the launch started moving backwards while leaving the terminal and whether adequate safety measures were in place at the time.
