25 injured as rival BNP factions clash over waterbody in Kishoreganj

At least 25 people were injured as two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) clashed over control of a waterbody in Ashtagram upazila of Kishoreganj on Friday.

The clash took place in the Akhra Bazar area of Purba Ashtagram Union from around noon to 2:00 PM, according to police and locals.

Police and local residents said the administration had recently invited tenders to lease the Bil Maksa waterbody. BNP Ashtagram upazila unit President Syed Saeed Ahmed and Organising Secretary SM Shaheen took part in the tender process.

Tensions had been running high between the two sides for several days after supporters of Syed Saeed Ahmed allegedly began preparing to take control of the waterbody and catch fish.

The two groups clashed around noon on Friday, leaving at least 25 people injured. However, the administration has not yet handed over the waterbody to either party.

Ashtagram Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Roknuzzaman said police went to the spot after receiving information about the clash and brought the situation under control.

The situation is now normal, he said.
