LAXMIPUR , Sept 25: Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has alleged that the activities and statements of the current opposition bear similarities to those of the “fascists” who fled the country on August 5.

“Those who fled on the 5th are carrying out their activities from across the border. They set fire to vehicles, carried out cocktail attacks under their leadership and organised flash processions. Similarities can be found between these activities and the misdeeds, statements and activities of the current opposition,” he said.

Anee made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organised on Friday morning to mark the inauguration of bank protection work along a WAPDA canal in Bhabaniganj Union of Laxmipur  Sadar Upazila.

He alleged that a “deep conspiracy” was underway against the country, democracy and the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

“This is Zia’s party, this is Khaleda Zia’s party. We have come here through movements and emerged from the streets. We confronted conspirators on the streets, and we will confront this evil force on the streets in the days ahead,” he said.

The minister also criticised the opposition over its language and political activities.

“They use abusive language in such a way. They consider this the beauty of democracy. If this is the beauty of democracy, the people of this country have not accepted them and will not accept them in the future,” he said.

He alleged that the opposition was involved in a new conspiracy to destroy democracy, claiming that its members themselves were saying that bomb and cocktail attacks would not stop unless the demands of the 11-party alliance were met.

Anee said the opposition was absent when the government took oath.

He further said the opposition spoke nicely in parliament, prompting the prime minister to increase allocations in response to their demands.

“But when they go outside, they take on the form of 1971. Outside parliament, they use uncivilised, indecent and discourteous language against us"language that cannot even be used in discussions within our own families,” he said.

Laxmipur  Water Development Board Executive Engineer Nahid Uz Zaman Khan, BNP district Joint Convener Hasibur Rahman, Bangladesh Football Federation Vice-President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy and BNP Sadar (East) upazila President Main Uddin Chowdhury Riaz, among others, were present.
