BCG rescues 8 fishermen stranded in deep sea

KHULNA, Sept 25: The Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) rescued eight fishermen and their fishing boat after its engine broke down in the deep sea off the Kokilmoni area of the Sundarbans.

Coast Guard Headquarters Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the information on Friday morning.
According to Coast Guard sources, the fishing boat carrying the eight fishermen had been fishing in the sea since September 19. At around 11am that day, when the boat was about 11 nautical miles south of Kokilmoni, its engine suddenly broke down, leaving the vessel adrift.

The fishermen remained stranded at sea for several days as the disabled boat drifted farther from the coast.
At around 3pm on September 24, the boat came within mobile network coverage. One of the fishermen then contacted the boat owner by phone and informed him of their situation.

The boat owner immediately sought assistance from the Coast Guard West Zone.

Acting on the information, a rescue team from Coast Guard Station Kokilmoni launched an operation in the deep sea and located the stranded boat. The team rescued all eight fishermen and brought the disabled boat to safety.

After the rescue, the fishermen were provided with first aid and necessary food.

The process of handing over the rescued fishermen and the fishing boat to the owner was underway, Coast Guard sources said.

The Coast Guard said it would continue such rescue operations to ensure the safety of people and maintain security and discipline in coastal and maritime areas.
