DUCSU for end to harassment in pry teacher verification

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has expressed concerns and strong protest over reports that hundreds of candidates selected for assistant teacher posts in government primary schools have not received appointment letters despite successfully completing the recruitment process.

In a statement issued on Friday (September 25), signed by DUCSU General Secretary S M Farhad, the union called for an end to harassment in the name of verification and demanded prompt action for candidates who may have been unfairly excluded.

DUCSU said reports that candidates were dropped from the recruitment process following negative findings in verification by police, the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and the Detective Branch of Police (DB) have raised serious concerns.

According to DUCSU, leaving candidates uncertain at the final stage of recruitment after they have been selected is unacceptable and undermines their rights, merit and qualifications. The union said any objection against a candidate must have a specific, verifiable and lawful basis, while the candidate should be given an opportunity to know the reasons for the objection and seek appropriate legal or administrative remedies.

DUCSU also raised concerns over proposed or reported changes in government recruitment processes, including a possible increase in the marks allocated to viva voce examinations. It said that the criteria, marks and decision-making procedures at every stage of recruitment should be transparent and accountable to prevent perceptions of discrimination or favouritism.

DUCSU urged the government to publicly clarify the reasons why selected candidates have not received appointment letters and to ensure that recruitment to government jobs remains transparent, merit-based and politically neutral.
