Flood fears grow in Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha

The Teesta River may flow above the danger level in parts of Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha, potentially inundating low-lying areas, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

The centre issued the warning on Saturday (September 26).

It said the land depression is currently located over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas of northeast Madhya Pradesh in India.

The system may move further north-northwest and gradually weaken. The monsoon remains fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate over the north Bay of Bengal.

According to weather agencies, moderate to moderately heavy rainfall is forecast in Bangladesh and adjoining upstream areas over the next three days.

Water levels of the Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region rose over the past 24 hours, while the Dharla remained stable.

The Teesta is expected to rise over the next 24 hours before falling over the following two days. Water levels of the Dharla and Dudhkumar are expected to fall over the next three days.

The Teesta may flow above the danger level at some points in Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha over the next 24 hours, temporarily flooding some low-lying areas along the river.

Meanwhile, water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma rivers fell over the past 24 hours and are expected to continue falling over the next five days.

Water levels of the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in the northeast also fell over the past 24 hours. The Kushiyara may rise over the next two days and remain stable on the third day, while the Surma is expected to fall over the next three days.
