19 die after drinking toxic liquor in India's Nagaland

At least 19 people have died after allegedly consuming toxic or adulterated liquor in India's Nagaland state over the past two days.

Police said eight people died in Mokokchung district and 11 in Tuensang district. Following the deaths, police arrested 19 people and seized around 3,000 bottles of liquor during raids in the areas.

Samples have been sent to Guwahati for forensic testing to determine the exact cause of the deaths.

Nagaland has had a law banning the sale and consumption of liquor since 1990. A special investigation team led by Additional Superintendent of Police I Bunglang Chang has been formed to investigate how the illegal and adulterated liquor entered circulation.

Police said they have obtained several important leads but are not disclosing details at this stage in the interest of the investigation.

Authorities have warned people against consuming unknown, unlabelled or suspicious liquor. They have also advised anyone experiencing dizziness, blurred vision, breathing difficulties or loss of consciousness after drinking alcohol to seek medical attention immediately.
