Police negligence in Radda MCH vandalism being investigated

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has said an investigation is underway to determine whether there was any police negligence in the vandalism and demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur.
“Preventing such incidents is certainly part of the police’s responsibility. We are looking into whether there was any negligence on the part of the police,” he said after visiting the site on Saturday afternoon.
Asked why the incident could not be prevented despite a police station being located nearby, the DMP commissioner said the incident took place late at night and authorities were checking whether police had reached the site in time after being informed.
A three-member committee headed by Saleh Mohammad Zakaria, additional deputy commissioner of DMP’s Darus Salam Zone, has been formed to investigate the matter. The committee is expected to submit its report on Saturday.
“If the report finds that any police member was negligent, action will be taken against them,” Mosleh Uddin said.
After visiting the site, he said it appeared that the vandalism could not have been carried out within just 30 minutes or an hour and that the attackers had taken some time to demolish the facility.
The commissioner said he had instructed the deputy commissioner of Mirpur Division immediately after learning about the incident.
“We have arrested four accused. We have taken the legal measures required from the police side and issued strict instructions to arrest the remaining accused,” he said.
He added that one person had been named in the case and police were trying to arrest him.
Asked about possible political influence behind the incident, Mosleh Uddin said police would not consider political affiliation.
“We will not look at any party or ideology. We will look at the offender. Whoever commits a crime will be brought under the law,” he said.
