Expired visa, fatal road crash claim Sierra Leone national’s life

Two motorcyclists, including a Sierra Leone national, were killed after a covered van hit their motorcycle in the capital’s Banani area.

The accident occurred at around 11:15 PM on Friday on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, west of the traffic police box at Amtoli intersection in Banani.

The deceased were identified as Khaled Saifullah, 38, a Pathao ride-sharing motorcyclist, and Michael, 36, a Sierra Leone national.

Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Tarek Hasan said Khaled was the son of Mohammad Rafiqullah of Sonaimuri upazila in Noakhali. He worked as a ride-sharing motorcyclist.

Michael was a teacher at Canadian International School and lived in Jonota Housing in Mirpur-2, the police officer said.

His visa had expired. He had formally bid farewell to his school on Friday and was scheduled to return to Sierra Leone on Saturday.

Tarek Hasan said Michael was returning home from Tejgaon on a Pathao motorcycle on Friday night. When they reached the Amtoli area, a covered van hit the motorcycle from behind, killing both riders on the spot.

The driver fled the scene with the covered van immediately after the accident.

Police are trying to identify the vehicle and arrest the driver.

The bodies were sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies, the police officer said.
