NASA, IBM launch AI model for lunar science

NASA and IBM have launched an open-source artificial intelligence model designed to help scientists analyse the Moon’s surface and accelerate lunar research.

The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, launched on September 10, was trained primarily on data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and other lunar missions. It can help researchers map craters, identify volcanic features and estimate areas where ice may exist near the Moon’s poles.

The model was trained using roughly 2 million image tiles, including more than one million high-resolution camera images and nearly 964,000 multispectral images. NASA said the tool can help scientists analyse vast amounts of lunar data more efficiently.

IBM said the model showed improved performance in identifying key lunar features, including potential ice deposits, compared with widely used methods in benchmark testing.
