NCL begins without national stars as Bangladesh's calendar tightens

The National Cricket League's 2026-27 season will begin on October 3 without most of Bangladesh's current national-team regulars, as a crowded international schedule limits their availability for the country's premier first-class competition.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board announced the squads for all eight divisional teams on Friday. The absence of current internationals reflects overlapping commitments, with the national T20 side involved in the Asian Games in Japan and members of the Test squad preparing for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates from October 9 to 13.

The scheduling pressure will continue beyond those assignments. Bangladesh are due to take part in a tri-series involving Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in the UAE from October 17 to 23 before hosting the West Indies in a two-Test series beginning on October 28.

A subsequent tour of South Africa is scheduled to begin in November, with the first Test set for November 15. The NCL, meanwhile, is scheduled to run until November 17, creating a direct overlap between domestic and international commitments.

The resulting gap in the divisional line-ups could limit the opportunity for domestic players to compete alongside established national cricketers. It also means the selectors will have fewer chances to assess some of the country's leading players in the longer format during the league.

Team officials have indicated that national players may feature in only one or two rounds, with participation expected to be concentrated around the third and fourth rounds, depending on their international commitments.

Defending champions Rangpur Division will open against Dhaka Division at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Sylhet will face Mymensingh in Sylhet, Khulna will meet Barishal at the Khulna Divisional Stadium, and Chattogram will take on Rajshahi.

The NCL remains an important platform for red-ball development and selection, but this season's calendar will test how effectively domestic cricket can operate alongside Bangladesh's expanding international programme.

With the league running almost parallel to a demanding sequence of Tests and limited-overs assignments, opportunities for national players to appear in the competition may be decided as much by scheduling as by form.
