Ex-Swechhasebak League leader dies after falling ill in jail

Khairul Amin Ruhul Sarker, 50, former joint convener of Katiadi upazila unit of Swechhasebak League, died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital in Dhaka early Sunday.
He fell ill while in Kishoreganj District Jail and was later admitted to hospital. He died in the early hours of the day, family members said.
Khairul Amin was the son of late Osman Gani of Dashpakhi village in Lohajuri union of Katiadi upazila. He was also a former assistant law affairs secretary of the Central Deed Writers Association and former organising secretary of the Katiadi Deed Writers Association.
His elder brother Nurul Amin, headteacher of Charjhakalia Model Government Primary School, alleged that Khairul had complained of chest pain for three consecutive days while in jail but did not receive timely medical treatment.
He said the family rushed to a hospital in Kishoreganj after being informed by the jail authorities. Khairul was later referred to Dhaka for better treatment, but was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after about four hours, according to Nurul.
As his condition deteriorated, he was later taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Nurul alleged that his brother could have survived had he received timely treatment and necessary medicines.
He said Khairul had remained inactive in politics for the past seven to eight years for various reasons. He had recently returned to the country after performing Umrah and was subsequently arrested and sent to jail.
However, Kishoreganj District Jail Jailer Nashir Ahmed said Khairul was initially sent to Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital after developing breathing difficulties.
As his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Dhaka under police escort, Nashir said. He later died while undergoing treatment.
According to family members, police from Katiadi Model Police Station arrested Khairul around noon on September 8. He was later produced before a court in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and was sent to Kishoreganj District Jail.
