Salah to miss South Sudan match over artificial pitch concerns

Egypt captain Mohamed Salah will miss Tuesday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against South Sudan as the team’s coaching staff wants to avoid the risk of injury on an artificial pitch.

The Egyptian Football Association confirmed that Salah will be rested for the match to help maintain his fitness over the long term.

In a statement, the association said coach Hossam Hassan and his technical staff decided to rest Salah because the match will be played on an artificial surface.

The decision was not made suddenly, as Salah and the coaching staff had discussed it earlier. They were concerned that playing on an artificial pitch could put additional strain on his joints and overall fitness.

Salah played 60 minutes in Egypt’s goalless draw against Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday. With a busy qualifying schedule, the coaching staff considers managing the 34-year-old forward’s playing time important.

Salah is not the only key player missing the South Sudan match. Nice defender Mohamed Abdelmonem will also not travel with the squad.

Egypt will play a friendly against South Africa on October 4 after the South Sudan match.
