10 injured in clash over library seating at Comilla University

At least 10 students were injured in a clash between two groups at Comilla University on Sunday afternoon over an argument about sitting in the library.

The clash took place around 3:00 PM, according to reports.

The incident reportedly began with an argument between students of the ICT Department under the Faculty of Engineering and students of the Archaeology Department, Datt Hall and Bijoy-24 Hall over a senior-junior issue stemming from unfamiliarity among the students.

The argument later turned into a clash. The injured students were given primary treatment, with at least two suffering head injuries and another sustaining a broken arm.

Tension has prevailed across the university campus since the incident.

Comilla University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr MM Shariful Karim said the dispute between senior and junior students over sitting in the library had initially been resolved.

“Some of them later went back to their halls and created further tension. We have so far learned that at least 10 students were injured. They were treated at the university health centre. Those who are seriously injured will be sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital,” he said.

The vice-chancellor said the university administration was working continuously to bring the situation under control and that police assistance had been sought to restore law and order.
