Bangladesh needs a mindset shift, better planning and stronger international promotion to fully tap its tourism potential, Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian said on Sunday (September 27).

He made the remarks at a discussion at Chattogram Circuit House marking World Tourism Day. A rally was also held in the city to mark the occasion.

Highlighting the beaches, hills and lakes of Chattogram and the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Zahidul said tourism could become a major contributor to the economy alongside the garments, remittance and agriculture sectors.

He stressed the need to identify target tourists, understand their expectations and promote the country's destinations through global digital platforms.

The DC urged tourism businesses to prioritise visitor safety, comfort and service quality instead of focusing only on short-term profits.

He said tourist safety should cover not only law and order but also food safety, accommodation and safe travel.

Zahidul also called for greater public-private cooperation to create jobs for the country's young workforce and develop the tourism sector.

He asked hotel and restaurant owners to submit employee lists to the district administration for health screening and training in hygiene, food safety and customer service.

He further called for a coordinated strategy to promote Chattogram's natural beauty and heritage internationally.

Tourist Police Chattogram Region Superintendent of Police Uttam Prasad Pathak, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Sharif Uddin, Chattogram City Corporation Regional Executive Officer Zobaida Akter and other stakeholders attended the programme.
