Six submit nomination papers

THAKURGAON, Sept 27: A total of six candidates from five political parties have submitted nomination papers for the by-election to the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, with the deadline for submission ending at 4pm on Sunday.

The seat fell vacant after former BNP Secretary General and former Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir took oath as president.

The candidates submitted their nomination papers to Returning Officer and District Election Officer Md Kamrul Islam at the District Election Office.

The candidates are BNP-nominated Mirza Faisal Amin, president of Thakurgaon District BNP; BNP district unit Vice-President Obaidullah Masud; Jamaat-led 11-party alliance candidate Delawar Hossain; Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Hafez Dr Md Khademul Islam; Khelafat Andolan candidate Abdul Alim Nizami; and Bangladesh Congress candidate Hussain Muhammad Omar Faruk.

Returning Officer Kamrul Islam said the nomination papers would be scrutinised on September 29.

According to the election schedule announced by the Election Commission, voting will be held in the constituency on October 29.

Thakurgaon-1 has 516,138 registered voters and 185 polling centres.
