Irish players refuse handshakes, defeat Israel in Nations League

Ireland delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Israel in their UEFA Nations League match in Debrecen, Hungary on Sunday (September 27), following a striking pre-match protest against Israeli military aggression in Gaza.

The Irish players took the pitch wearing black armbands and deliberately bypassed the traditional pre-match handshakes with the Israeli team.

During the playing of the Israeli national anthem, Ireland’s players stood with their hands behind their backs, facing downward toward the pitch.

Irish captain Dara O'Shea maintained his hands firmly behind his back during the pre-match coin toss, shaking hands only with the referee and assistants while completely avoiding Israel captain Manor Solomon.

In the match, Troy Parrott opened the scoring for Ireland in the 13th minute, before Adam Idah doubled the lead three minutes later.

Jack Moylan sealed the 3-0 victory with a third goal in the 25th minute, celebrating by kissing his black armband before kissing his national team badge.

Speaking after the match, Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson acknowledged the complex circumstances surrounding the fixture, noting that while the team chose to play, the victory brought satisfaction despite mixed reactions to their participation.
