Imam found hanging in mosque, friend injured in Katiadi

Police recovered the hanging body of an imam from a room at a mosque in Katiadi upazila early Monday, while his friend was found injured in the same room and taken to hospital.

The deceased was identified as Shamim Mia, 25, son of Farid Mia of Charjhakalya village under Jalalpur union. He was a student of Fekamara Alim Madrasa and also worked as the imam of the mosque at Ichhamuddin Sarker Bari.

His injured friend, Sohan, 24, son of late Chhoid Mia of the same village, was initially taken to Katiadi Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

According to locals, Shamim and Sohan were close friends and occasionally spent the night together in a room adjacent to the mosque.

On Sunday night, locals heard a commotion from the room and rushed there. They found Sohan lying there with serious injuries to his neck and body. Sohan reportedly told those present that Shamim had assaulted him, while Shamim denied the allegation at the time.

After Sohan was taken to hospital, Shamim's father went to the mosque and found his son hanging inside the room. Police later recovered the body from the scene.

Katiadi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Rafiqul Islam said the initial investigation and evidence suggested that Shamim might have died by suicide.

However, he said the exact cause of death would be determined after an autopsy. The body was sent to the morgue of Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital in Kishoreganj.

The OC said police would be able to learn more about the incident after taking Sohan's statement, adding that necessary legal action was being taken.

Shamim's family members said he was gentle by nature and had no known disputes with anyone. They called for a proper investigation into the incident.

Sohan's family also said they were unaware of any previous enmity between the two friends.
