Eight AL, affiliate activists arrested in Ctg

Eight leaders and activists of the activities-banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations have been arrested in Banshkhali, Chattogram, police said.

The arrests were made during separate drives in different areas of the upazila on Sunday night.

Police also seized two cakes allegedly prepared to mark the birthday of former prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.

The arrested are Ahmed Hossain, 55, Zaker Ahmed, 60, Zafar Ahmed, 32, Zamir Uddin, 28, Riaz Uddin, 21, Syed Nur Hridoy, 23, SM Mozammel Haque, 22, and Azad Mia, 18.

According to police, two of the arrested are members of the Awami League, two of the Jubo League and four of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League.

Police said some of the Chhatra League activists were preparing to cut a cake to mark Sheikh Hasina’s birthday when the cakes were seized.

Banshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Robiul Haque said, "the eight were arrested during drives in different parts of the upazila."

“Cases have been filed against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act,” he said, adding that the arrested were sent to court on Monday.
