Youth gets life term for raping teenage girl

A court in Faridpur has sentenced a youth to life imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old girl in Charbhadrasan.

The convict, Raju Sheikh, was also fined Tk 200,000, in default of which he will serve an additional year in prison.

Judge of the Faridpur Child Violence Prevention Tribunal and District and Sessions Judge delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. Raju was present in court during the pronouncement and was later sent to jail under tight police security.

According to court sources, Raju, a neighbour of the victim, took the girl to a thatched room on the night of March 1, 2021, after tying a cloth over her mouth. He confined her there and raped her throughout the night.

The girl’s family members rescued her unconscious from behind the room the following morning and admitted her to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

On March 4, the girl’s mother filed a case against Raju as the sole accused under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Charbhadrasan Police Station.

After investigation, then Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ilias Hossain submitted a charge sheet to the court on June 25, 2021.

Following a lengthy hearing and examination of witnesses, the court found the charges proven beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Raju to life imprisonment with hard labour and fined him Tk 200,000.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Golam Rabbani Ratan confirmed the matter, saying the court convicted Raju after reviewing the evidence and case documents. He said the prosecution was satisfied with the verdict.
