Shahjalal airport expansion project cost rises by Tk 848 crore

The cost of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport expansion project is set to increase by Tk 847.58 crore, with the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approving its third revision.

Under the revision, the project’s total cost has been proposed at Tk 22,213.10 crore, while its implementation period has been extended to June 2027.

The third revision of the airport expansion project was approved at an ECNEC meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday, along with 12 other projects. The meeting approved a total expenditure of around Tk 15,823 crore for 13 projects.

The third-terminal project began in July 2016, with an initial completion deadline of June 2022. Its implementation period was extended several times. The latest revision proposes extending the deadline to June 2027.

According to Planning Ministry documents, the project was initially estimated to cost more than Tk 13,610 crore. Under the second revision, the cost rose to Tk 21,365.52 crore.

The third revision will increase the cost by Tk 847.58 crore compared with the second revision.

Under the third revision, government funding has been set at Tk 5,115.97 crore, while project loans will account for Tk 17,097.12 crore.
