Man gets death sentence for raping teenage girl

A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death and fined him Tk 500,000 for raping his 13-year-old stepdaughter, who later became pregnant.

Judge Masrur Salekeen of the Dhaka Child Violence Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict on Monday. The 56-year-old convict, Jamal Hossain, was present in court and was later sent to jail under a warrant.

According to the case documents, the girl was a Class VII student and lived with her mother and stepfather in Kamrangirchar. Hossain raped her on August 28, 2023, when her mother was away. The case said he had raped her several times before.

The girl later became pregnant and gave birth to a child.

Her mother filed a case with Kamrangirchar Police Station on August 28, 2023. CID Inspector Kazi Golam Mostofa submitted a charge sheet against Hossain on January 23, 2025.

The trial began after charges were framed on August 24, 2025. The tribunal recorded statements from eight witnesses before delivering the verdict.

The court also ordered that if Hossain fails to pay the fine, his movable or immovable property may be auctioned and the proceeds given to the victim or her legal heirs as compensation.
