Eggs thrown at 4 arrested Swechhasebak League leaders

Four Swechhasebak League leaders, including Bogura district president Sazedur Rahman Shaheen, have been arrested in connection with multiple cases filed over the anti-discrimination student movement.

The district Detective Branch (DB) police arrested them from a resort and its surrounding area in Cox’s Bazar’s Kolatoli Beach around 10:30 PM on Monday.

The other three are district senior vice-president Syed Abu Jafar Siddique Ripon, city unit organising secretary Md Sabbir Hossain Nirjon alias Bhadu, and Swechhasebak League activist Md Ferdous Hossain.

They were produced before Senior Judicial Magistrate Mehdi Hasan’s court in Bogura around 5:45 PM on Tuesday. Eggs were thrown at them as they were taken to the court, triggering tension on the premises. Additional police were deployed to control the situation.

The court rejected their bail pleas and granted three-day remand for each of the four after DB police sought their remand for questioning.

According to police, Shaheen faces more than 11 cases, including murder, extortion, arms, explosives and Special Powers Act cases. Bhadu has more than nine cases involving extortion, preparation for robbery and explosives, while two cases against Ferdous are pending trial.

Bogura DB Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Bahar said Shaheen had been hiding in Cox’s Bazar and was arrested based on secret information.

He said legal action would be taken after reviewing the cases against the four.
