Mirpur eviction drive failed to maintain proper communication: Salahuddin

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Wednesday that the magistrate assigned to an eviction drive in Mirpur failed to maintain proper communication with police, resulting in a lack of coordination during the operation.
He said an investigation into the incident has been ordered.
While discussing the recent unrest surrounding the eviction drive in Mirpur, the minister said the government was continuing its efforts to ensure public safety and maintain peace, cautioning against assessing the country’s overall law-and-order situation based on one or two isolated incidents.
On the issue of a list of extortionists, Salahuddin said maintaining such lists was part of the police’s routine activities.
“However, there was no failure on the part of the police or the government in the incidents concerned.''
The minister said all information could not be disclosed at this stage in the interest of the investigation.
“Whoever is involved in the incidents, strict action will be taken against them.''
He said an investigation into the incident has been ordered.

On the issue of a list of extortionists, Salahuddin said maintaining such lists was part of the police’s routine activities.
“Such lists have always existed with the police,” he said, adding that, police also maintain and regularly update lists of terrorists, criminals, drug dealers and, action is being taken within 24 hours of receiving complaints. He also claimed that police respond immediately to calls made to the national emergency service 999, reaching the scene, making arrests people involved in illegal arms activities.
He said no new list had been prepared as part of any special initiative.
The home minister said action against criminals was continuing and would be intensified.
''The government was treating criminals as criminals regardless of their political affiliations.''
Salahuddin Ahmed said failure to take action in a particular incident would constitute responsibility and could be considered a failure of the police.
“However, there was no failure on the part of the police or the government in the incidents concerned.''
The minister said all information could not be disclosed at this stage in the interest of the investigation.
“Whoever is involved in the incidents, strict action will be taken against them.''
