Second girl dies after madrasa rooftop electrocution

A 14-year-old girl has died after suffering severe burns in an electrocution incident at a women’s madrasa in Fatullah, Narayanganj, raising the death toll to two.

The girl, Zidni, died around 6:00AM Wednesday while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. She had suffered burns to 82 per cent of her body.

Earlier, 11-year-old Atia died at around 5:30PM while receiving treatment. She had suffered burns to 45 per cent of her body.

Five students of Mahela Khatun Women’s Madrasa in Kashipur Hajipara suffered electric burns around 5:00PM Saturday after going to the rooftop.

Fire service officials said the students had gone there to play and brought sugarcane with them. A 33,000-volt power line runs over the rooftop, and officials believe the sugarcane came into contact with the line, causing a flash and fire.

Three other injured students remain under treatment. Two are in stable condition, while another is being treated for burns covering 55 per cent of her body.
