Woman trafficked to Libya after paying Tk 26 lakh, ransom demanded

A 69-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly taking Tk 25.95 lakh from a woman promising to send her to Italy, trafficking her to Libya and demanding another Tk 10 lakh in ransom.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Md Abul Hossain from Karhihata village in Kapasia, Gazipur, around 7:00PM Tuesday, CID Special Police Superintendent (Media) Md Sufi Ullah said on Wednesday.
According to the case statement, the accused and his associates collected Tk 25.95 lakh from the victim at different times, promising to send her to Italy. She was allegedly sent to Libya on 12 June 2024.
After reaching Libya, members of a human trafficking network allegedly confined and physically and mentally tortured her and demanded Tk 10 lakh from her family as ransom. She was subjected to further torture after her family failed to pay, according to the complaint.
The woman eventually escaped and took shelter elsewhere. Libyan police later detained her and sent her back to Bangladesh on 16 October 2024.
She filed a case with Mirpur Model Police Station in Dhaka on 21 September 2025 under Sections 7, 8, 9 and 10 of the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act, 2012.
CID said its investigation found preliminary evidence linking Abul Hossain to the alleged trafficking. Acting on intelligence, the agency traced and arrested him.
He was sent to court with a plea for remand. The investigation is ongoing.
CID also said another human trafficking case under the same law was filed against Hossain at Mirpur Police Station on 2 October 2025.
