A former student of Dhaka University has threatened self-immolation at the Raju Sculpture after his name was excluded from the official 49th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) gazette following background verification.

The candidate, Md. Jasim Uddin, an alumnus of the Political Science department at Dhaka University, was recommended for appointment after passing both the written and viva examinations of the 49th BCS.

However, his name was missing from the final gazette published by the Ministry of Public Administration on Wednesday (September 30).

Expressed through social media posts, Jasim announced his decision to set himself on fire in front of DU's Raju Sculpture on October 12—the scheduled joining date for 49th BCS officers—referencing Tunisian youth Mohamed Bouazizi.

He questioned his exclusion, stating he was never involved in criminal cases or violence, while noting that he supported the July 2024 student movement despite holding a position in the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) residence hall committee in 2022.

Following Jasim's posts, documents surfaced online showing he was appointed Joint General Secretary of the BCL Kobi Jasim Uddin Hall committee on February 12, 2022.

Addressing the issue on social media, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed defended the verification outcome, emphasizing that holding a BCL post remains a disqualifying factor regardless of subsequent political shifts.

According to ministry sources, Jasim is among 57 candidates recommended by the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) who were omitted from the final 49th BCS gazette based on adverse reports during police and intelligence background verifications, which targeted individuals associated with the banned Chhatra League and political outfits.
