China has become directly involved in the development of Bangladesh’s second-largest seaport, Mongla Port, through a major modernisation project.
The project will cost around Tk 4,682 crore, including Tk 3,592 crore in Chinese government-to-government loans. It includes the construction of two 368-metre container jetties, large yards for loaded and empty containers and facilities for handling hazardous cargo.
A dredging project involving 330.90 lakh cubic metres of sediment will also be implemented to maintain the navigability of the Pashur Channel.
In addition, a China-Bangladesh Mongla Port Economic Zone will be established on 110 acres of land near the port.
Mongla Port Authority recently presented details of the projects at a press conference. The port chairman said the Chinese-backed project would significantly increase the port’s container-handling capacity and introduce modern facilities.
Experts said the project could boost trade and economic activity in the southwestern region, while port businesses welcomed the development, stressing the need for improved container transportation and channel navigability.
Business leaders also said the expansion could increase commercial activity and create new employment opportunities in the region, contributing to the country’s blue economy.
