An indefinite transport strike began in Habiganj on Thursday following a long-running dispute between transport owners and workers in Habiganj and Moulvibazar over alleged vehicle seizures, vandalism and assaults on transport workers.
The Habiganj Motor Owners’ Group called the strike in protest after buses operating on the Habiganj-Moulvibazar-Sylhet route were allegedly detained in Moulvibazar and transport workers were assaulted.
The group’s general secretary, Abu Moin Chowdhury Sohel, announced the strike at a meeting with journalists at his office on Tuesday (September 29).
He alleged that workers and drivers of the group’s Biratihin Express buses had repeatedly been stopped at Sherpur by owners and workers affiliated with SMS Transport in Moulvibazar. He also alleged that the buses were vandalised and workers beaten.
According to Sohel, three of the group’s buses are currently being held in front of the SMS Transport office.
He said several meetings had been held to resolve the dispute, but decisions reached during those meetings had not been implemented. As a result, the group decided to launch the indefinite strike.
“No public transport will operate on any road in the district from October 1,” Sohel said, adding that the strike would continue until the dispute is resolved.
The Habiganj Motor Owners’ Group and Moulvibazar’s SMS Transport owners and workers have been involved in a longstanding dispute. The conflict has previously led to allegations of obstruction of bus services, assaults on transport workers and vandalism of vehicles.
