US President Donald Trump has announced plans for South Korea to invest up to $200 billion in US projects, while Seoul said a proposed $54 billion Alaska LNG pipeline investment has not yet been finalised.
Trump made the announcement at the Oval Office on Wednesday.
The investment is part of a broader $350 billion package agreed between Washington and Seoul under a trade deal last year. The package includes $150 billion for shipbuilding and $200 billion for strategic investments.
“Thanks to the agreements my administration has secured with the Republic of Korea, they will invest up to $200 billion,” Trump said.
He said the investment would include eight large-scale nuclear power plants, a natural gas pipeline and a 6-gigawatt power generation facility in Texas.
South Korea confirmed plans to invest $22.3 billion in a Texas gas-fired power project to supply electricity to AI data centres. It also confirmed a $120 billion investment in eight nuclear reactors.
However, Seoul said the proposed Alaska LNG pipeline would proceed only if certain commercial and legal conditions are met.
South Korea’s industry ministry said it would review the Alaska LNG project to assess its commercial viability and compliance with legal procedures. It said no decision had been made on whether to invest in the project or on the size of the investment.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung also said the commercial viability of both the LNG project and the nuclear reactors must be confirmed before they proceed.
If implemented, the Alaska LNG project would include an 807-mile pipeline carrying natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope to a liquefaction facility on the state’s southern coast. The gas could then be exported to Asian markets.
According to the White House, the project is designed to transport about 3.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and produce up to 20 million metric tonnes of LNG annually.
The project has faced years of uncertainty over its cost, financing and commercial viability. Reuters reported that the proposed development is estimated to cost between $44.5 billion and $54.5 billion.
Trump has repeatedly promoted the project as a way to increase US energy exports and strengthen ties with allies such as South Korea and Japan.
The investment announcement is the latest in a series of economic initiatives being highlighted by Trump ahead of the November midterm elections.
