Retired Major General Golam Mahyuddin Chowdhury has been placed on a three-day remand in a case filed over the attack, vandalism and looting at New Guinea Properties in Dhaka's ECB Chattar area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam passed the order on Thursday (October 1) after the Detective Branch (DB) of police sought a five-day remand for questioning. Prosecution Sub-Inspector Tarekur Rahman confirmed the matter.
DB police arrested Mahyuddin from a house in Segunbagicha under Ramna police station at around 2:45PM on Wednesday. The investigation officer, DB Inspector Jehad Hossain, produced him before the court and sought the remand.
During the hearing, the defence sought cancellation of the remand and bail, arguing that Mahyuddin was not present at the scene and had been implicated in the case falsely. The court, however, granted a three-day remand.
The case was filed by New Guinea Properties Director Saiful Islam Bhuiyan with Cantonment Police Station. It names 13 people, including Mahyuddin, while another 150-200 unidentified people were also accused.
The incident took place at New Guinea Properties in South Manikdi on Saturday night. A studio of content creator Salman Muqtadir located at the housing project was also reportedly attacked.
Police said a dispute over possession and control of land had initially emerged as a possible motive, but the specific cause of the incident would be established after investigation.
