Portugal put aside squad drama surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo to secure a convincing 4-2 away victory over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday (October 1).
The Portuguese side took the pitch 24 hours after Ronaldo reportedly departed the team camp following comments from head coach Jorge Jesus suggesting the 41-year-old forward might be benched once again.
Gonçalo Ramos, stepping into Ronaldo's starting role, set up João Cancelo for the opening goal in the 13th minute. After Mikkel Damsgaard equalized for Denmark in the 23rd minute, Ramos restored Portugal's lead just two minutes later, making it 2-1.
Denmark drew level again in the 53rd minute through Rasmus Højlund, who celebrated his goal with Ronaldo’s signature "Siu" celebration. However, Vitinha put Portugal ahead for the third time in the 67th minute, converting a near-post chance following a Bruno Fernandes free-kick. João Felix sealed the victory with an 87th-minute strike.
The win maintains Portugal's unbeaten run in the tournament. Portugal will wrap up the international break at home against Norway on Sunday, while Denmark travel to face Wales.
