Bangladesh and South Korea have agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and defence, alongside political and economic engagement.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir held separate meetings with South Korea’s First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo and Vice Minister of National Defence Lee Doo-hee in Seoul on Friday (October 2).

During his meeting with Park Yoon-joo, Kabir expressed Bangladesh’s readiness to work closely with the Korean government to deepen and expand the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries.

He also handed over an invitation letter from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, requesting him to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time.

Kabir praised South Korea’s remarkable progress in the global economy and technology sectors, saying its development experience continues to inspire Bangladesh. He also welcomed regular foreign office consultations and other high-level exchanges between the two countries.

The state minister reiterated Bangladesh’s support for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and welcomed progress towards signing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Bangladesh and South Korea, expressing hope that the agreement would be signed soon.

He also called for greater Korean investment in semiconductors, electronics, shipbuilding, light engineering, high-end readymade garments, information technology and other technology-driven sectors.

Kabir also highlighted opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, agro-processing, logistics, digital transformation, skills development and services. He sought greater cooperation from South Korea in creating employment opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled Bangladeshi workers under the Employment Permit System.

He appreciated South Korea’s humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas and sought its continued support for their speedy and sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.

At the meeting with Vice Minister of National Defence Lee Doo-hee, the two sides discussed ways to expand bilateral defence cooperation, including training, capacity building, UN peacekeeping operations and defence industry cooperation.

Kabir said Bangladesh was working to establish a defence industrial zone and invited the Korean side to explore investment opportunities in the initiative to enhance technological and industrial cooperation while ensuring mutual economic benefits.

The two meetings also covered regional and international issues, with both sides stressing the importance of strengthening cooperation in multilateral forums.
