A Rohingya youth lost both his ankles in a landmine explosion near the zero line of the Ukhiya border in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday evening.
The incident occurred inside Myanmar’s Rakhine State, across the border from Palongkhali in Ukhiya.
The injured youth was identified as Hamid Hossain, 32, son of Kamal Hossain, a resident of Block C-27 of the Kutupalong Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya. Local fishermen brought him to Bangladesh after he was injured.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Zahirul Islam, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 64 Battalion in Ukhiya, confirmed the incident.
He said, "a landmine suddenly exploded with a loud blast inside Myanmar territory, approximately 250 yards west of the zero line. Local residents later informed the authorities that a youth had been injured in the explosion."
Hamid was initially taken to the MSF Hospital in Kutupalong, Ukhiya. As his condition deteriorated, he was later transferred to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
