NOAKHALI, Oct 2: Footpaths in the Noakhali District town have allegedly been reoccupied by shops shortly after a joint administration drive to clear illegal encroachments, causing fresh sufferings for pedestrians.
The hour-long drive was conducted on Tuesday afternoon on several important roads in the town. Officials from the district administration, police, municipality and relevant government departments took part in the operation.
During the drive, temporary shops, makeshift businesses and illegal structures occupying footpaths and parts of roads were evicted from busy areas. Shopkeepers were also warned against occupying footpaths for business.
However, locals alleged that shops were set up again at several places soon after the drive ended. The development has sparked frustration among pedestrians.
Locals said footpaths in the town have long been occupied by hawkers and traders. In many places, shopkeepers keep goods on the footpaths, while permanent or temporary structures have also been built for business.
As a result, pedestrians are often forced to walk on the main roads, increasing traffic congestion and the risk of accidents. Women, children, elderly people and students face the greatest difficulties, they said.
Deputy Commissioner Shafiqul Islam, Police Superintendent NM Nasiruddin, District BNP Convener Mahbub Alamgir Alo, former general secretary Advocate Abdur Rahman, District and Sessions Judge's Court Public Prosecutor Advocate Shahadat Hossain, Executive Magistrates and other officials were present during the drive.
