A 70-year-old tea garden worker was killed by lightning in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Miron Das Panika, a resident of the Madanpur Line area of Sree Gobindapur Tea Garden. He was the son of late Paban Das Panika.
The incident occurred at Sree Gobindapur Tea Garden in Madhabpur Union around 1:30 PM.
According to police and local sources, Miron Das Panika went to the cremation ground of Sree Gobindapur Tea Garden to feed cattle when rain and lightning suddenly began. At one point, he was struck by lightning and died on the spot.
Locals later recovered his body and took it home. On receiving the information, police from Kamalganj Police Station visited the scene and prepared an inquest report.
Kamalganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Komor Uddin said, "legal procedures in connection with the incident are underway."
Kamalganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sandip Talukdar said, "he had received information about the death. The information has been sent to the district authorities."
He added that the district administration provides Tk 25,000 in financial assistance to families of people killed by lightning, which will be provided to the deceased's family.
