A Bangladeshi migrant worker from Barguna died after being buried under soil while working at a construction site in Saudi Arabia, with his family now seeking government assistance to repatriate his body due to financial hardship.

Ismail Hossain, 40, was buried when the soil collapsed while he was working in a deep pipeline trench near Riyadh airport on Thursday afternoon. He died at the scene.

Ismail had travelled to Saudi Arabia on a labour visa in January 2025 after borrowing around Tk 500,000 in the hope of improving his family’s financial condition. He later secured a job with a Chinese company near Riyadh airport through a relative.

His wife, Sonia Begum, said they had been told it would cost around Tk 300,000 to bring his body back to Bangladesh, an amount the family cannot afford.

She appealed to the government to arrange the repatriation of her husband’s body.

Barguna Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Shah Aziz said, "the family had not yet contacted the authorities, adding that maximum assistance would be provided if they approached the administration."
