The Philippines, current chair of ASEAN, has expressed concern over a deadly airstrike in Myanmar’s Rakhine state and offered to facilitate discussions within the regional bloc on ways to assist the country.
Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for ASEAN Affairs Ana Marie Hernando said the Philippines was closely monitoring developments and was concerned about the destruction, deaths and injuries caused by the attacks.
As ASEAN chair, Manila said it remained mindful of the views of all member states and would continue to follow the bloc’s consensus-based approach.
The Philippines also said it was ready to facilitate discussions within ASEAN on ways to assist Myanmar, in line with the shared goal of finding a solution that is “Myanmar-owned and led”.
The September 28 airstrike in Kyauktaw, Rakhine’s deadliest such attack since a hospital bombing in December, killed 50 people and wounded dozens more.
Myanmar has been embroiled in a nationwide civil war since the 2021 coup. An alliance of armed groups, including the Arakan Army, has been fighting the military.
The conflict has killed around 100,000 people and displaced more than 3.5 million in the Southeast Asian country.
