Seven people were arrested with around 781.3 grammes of gold jewellery, 10 mobile phones, two laptops and three cartons of cigarettes in three separate operations in the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area on Saturday.
Airport (13) Armed Police Battalion (APBn) said five people were arrested near the airport roundabout and 484.2 grammes of gold jewellery, two laptops, eight mobile phones and three cartons of cigarettes were recovered from them.
The detainees were identified as Tofazzal Hossain, 37, Jasim Uddin, 39, Arafat Hossain, 28, Arif, 42, and Md Alamin Gazi, 37.
In two other operations, Rupban Begum, 39, and M A Matin, 30, were detained near the airport’s arrival area and main entrance respectively. Police recovered 98.7 grammes and 198.4 grammes of gold jewellery from them, along with two mobile phones.
Airport APBn said the detainees were allegedly involved as receivers in a gold-smuggling syndicate and had brought the jewellery into Bangladesh through unidentified passengers.
Three separate cases were filed with Airport Police Station on Saturday.
Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan, superintendent of police (operations) of Airport (13) APBn, said operations and intelligence activities would continue to prevent smuggling and other crimes at the airport.
