Several people were detained in Nilphamari on Saturday while protesting and surrounding the superintendent of police’s (SP) office, demanding the release of a man accused in three drug cases.

The protest was held on Saturday afternoon by supporters of the detained man, identified as Sujon.

Police said a special team of Nilphamari district police arrested Sujon, a charge-sheeted accused in three drug cases, from Dimla upazila on Friday.

His supporters gathered outside the SP’s office the following afternoon and began a protest demanding his release. Police later detained several people from the spot and brought the situation under control.

The number and identities of those detained have not been disclosed. Nilphamari district police have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
