NARAYANGANJ, Oct 3: Another madrasa student died after being electrocuted by an 11,000-volt power line while playing on the roof of a madrasa in Kashipur’s Hajipara area of Narayanganj Sadar Upazila, raising the death toll to three.
Lamia, 15, died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at around 9:45pm on Thursday, said resident surgeon Dr Sultan Mahmud Shikder.
Earlier, students Atia, 11, and Zidni, 14, died on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Lamia had suffered burns to 55 per cent of her body.
The accident occurred on the roof of Mahela Khatun Girls’ Madrasa on Sept 26, leaving five students injured. Atia, Zidni and Lamia were treated in the ICU, while Asiya, 12, and Sumaiya, 13, are receiving treatment in a hospital ward.
Fire Service Deputy Director Abdullah Al Arefeen said preliminary investigation suggested that a sugarcane-like object carried by one of the children came into contact with the power line, causing a spark and fire.
Dr Shikder said the three deceased students suffered burns ranging from 45 to 82 per cent, while the other two were comparatively stable.
