The European Union is exploring the possibility of signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Bangladesh while assuring continued support as the country prepares to graduate from its Least Developed Country (LDC) status, EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller said on Sunday (October 4).

Speaking at a session during the fifth Bay of Bengal Conversation at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, Ambassador Miller emphasized that the EU no longer views Bangladesh merely as an aid recipient, but rather as a key partner for mutually beneficial trade.

The ambassador highlighted that establishing a balanced trade structure and ensuring a level playing field for businesses are essential prerequisites before formal FTA negotiations begin.

He added that in a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape, Bangladesh's strategic importance in South Asia, the Bay of Bengal, and the broader Indo-Pacific region continues to expand.

He urged national authorities to strengthen institutional governance, human rights, labor laws, and environmental safeguards to attract greater European capital and investment.

Organized by the Center for Governance Studies (CGS) under the theme "Navigating Power, Technology, and Trust in a Reordered World," the three-day international conference brought together representatives from over a hundred countries.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the event on Saturday, which is scheduled to conclude on Monday.
