A Dhaka court on Sunday denied bail to Azan Ali Sharif, a teenager detained in connection with the death of construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim in a car accident in the capital’s Baridhara Diplomatic Zone.

Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 Judge Md Abdul Moktadir passed the order after a hearing.

The teenager’s lawyer, Advocate Alamgir Hossain, sought bail, while state counsel Mohammad Sharif Uddin Mamun opposed the plea. The judge said releasing him so soon could send a “negative message to society.”

Earlier, on September 24, the court had sent the teenager to a juvenile development centre after rejecting his bail petition. He has since remained in detention.

According to the investigation, CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas showed Azan emerging from the driver’s seat of the private car shortly after the incident. Investigators said they had found preliminary evidence of his involvement.

The defence, however, claimed that Azan was sitting beside the driver and that the accident occurred unintentionally after Mim, who was hearing-and speech-impaired, failed to move away quickly despite the horn. The defence also said the teenager’s family had paid Tk 900,000 in compensation to the victim’s family through a local settlement.

Mim’s elder brother, Moktadir Islam, filed a case with Gulshan Police Station on September 23 under the Road Transport Act, accusing the car’s alleged driver, Akash Mark, of causing the fatal accident through reckless driving.
