A pharmaceutical plant operated by India’s Kusum Group in Ukraine’s Sumy was largely destroyed in a Russian drone attack, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

The main structure of the plant was mostly destroyed in the attack, while officials warned that the number of casualties could change. Footage from the site showed a huge plume of smoke rising from the area struck by the drones.

The Kusum Group began operations in Ukraine in 1994 as a distributor exporting Indian medicines to the country. It is currently run by Indian national Rajeev Gupta.

In 2002, the group stopped distributing other companies’ products and began marketing its own brands. It later entered pharmaceutical manufacturing, opening a plant in India in 2007 and another in Sumy in 2009, followed by two more facilities in India.

The group manufactures more than 50 mostly generic pharmaceutical products and sells them in more than nine countries, including Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and the Philippines.

The Sumy plant had continued operating throughout the Russia-Ukraine war but has now suffered severe damage. The loss is estimated at at least Rs 400 crore. The group describes itself as a Ukrainian company with Indian roots.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack in a post on X and expressed condolences to the family of the person killed.

He said Russian forces had also carried out drone attacks on the Pivnichnyi Bridge in Kyiv and a communications facility in Dnipro. Six people were injured in those attacks, he said.

The attack comes amid increased Russian use of fast, jet-powered Shahed drones against Ukraine. Ukrainian air defence forces have struggled to intercept the drones because of their high speed.
