Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir central president Nurul Islam Saddam has alleged that the “business around the spirit of the Liberation War” has been used to create divisions among the people and hold the country back.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a reception and career guidance programme for first-year higher secondary and undergraduate students at Rohanpur Yusuf Ali Government College in Chapainawabganj on Sunday.
Saddam said people had long been taught about the “spirit of 1971”, but it had been used to divide the nation.
He compared Bangladesh’s post-war experience with countries such as Germany and the former Soviet Union, saying nations that overcame conflicts were able to move forward by avoiding divisions among their people.
Saddam also alleged that people born after 1990 were still being labelled as Razakars, Al-Badr or Al-Shams because of their perceived political or ideological positions.
He said such labelling was preventing the nation from moving forward and was one of the reasons Bangladesh had failed to progress sufficiently over the past 55 years.
The programme was chaired by Chapainawabganj district East Shibir president Mohammad Abdullah.
Rajshahi University professor Shah Hossain Ahmed Mehdi, acting principal of Rohanpur Yusuf Ali Government College Professor Mehedul Islam, Shibir central law affairs secretary Shamim Ahmed, Rajshahi metropolitan president Imran Nazir and Chapainawabganj Jamaat-e-Islami working committee member Mohammad Tariqul Islam, among others, attended the event.
