Thousands of young protesters and opposition supporters demonstrated in New Delhi and Mumbai on Sunday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in voter-list revisions. Police detained protesters for a third consecutive day.
Opposition leaders Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray led a protest in Mumbai, calling for the scrapping of the electoral-roll revisions and Kumar's resignation. In Delhi, police detained several demonstrators as they gathered in the evening, according to a Reuters witness. Police have not disclosed the number or identities of those detained over the three days.
The protesters allege that a nationwide voter-roll revision launched last year has removed millions of eligible voters and could benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Election Commission and the BJP have denied the allegations, saying the exercise is intended to remove duplicate, deceased and ineligible entries. The commission has also directed officials to register eligible voters who were inadvertently left off the rolls.
Kumar has not responded to the demands for his resignation. Opposition parties are planning further demonstrations, including a march to the Election Commission office, while the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party has announced a major rally in Delhi on October 10.
