PAIKGACHHA, KHULNA, Oct 4: Cracks have appeared at several points on a road in the Paikgachha municipality before its construction has been completed, while the guide-wall along the road has allegedly not been properly filled with soil.
The road runs from the old food warehouse area of Paikgachha municipality past Shahid Gafur Government Primary School and connects to the main road.
During a recent visit, this correspondent found cracks in the concrete section of the road. Some sections inside the guide-wall also had insufficient soil filling.
Locals alleged that instead of addressing the underlying cause after the cracks appeared, construction materials were used to cover them up. They questioned the durability and quality of the work.
There have also been questions over an initiative to pay the contractor's bill before the work is completed.
A representative of the contractor, Aminur Islam, said, “We will fill the guide-wall with soil within a week and repair the cracks.”
Md Nur Ahmed, Engineer of Paikgachha Municipality, said the work would be inspected before the bill was paid.
“We will inspect the work first. No payment will be made if any defects are found,” he said.
Locals demanded that the road cracks and soil filling inside the guide wall be technically examined and necessary measures taken before completion of the work.
They also called for withholding payment until the quality and quantity of the work are properly verified.
